Entry requirements
Academic preconditions
The students are expected to have knowledge of fundamental molecular biology principles obtained from FF503.
Course introduction
To introduce the students of pharmacy and pharmaceutical science to essential microbiology. The selected topics cover characteristics of microorganisms, microorganisms and the treatment of infections by antibiotics, and microorganisms in the manufacturing of medicines.
The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the courses [FF503], and gives an academic basis for studying the topics [FA504, production of medicins], that are part of the degree.
At the end of the course the students will have gained knowledge about the most important aspects of microbiology and they will have practical experience and be competent to:
- Study microorganisms by microscopy.
- Work in the laboratory under sterile conditions.
- Use and understand the growth conditions for bacteria.
- Determine the level microbial/contamination content of air and water.
- Assay antimicrobial compounds.
Expected learning outcome
After completing the course, students should be able to:
- Describe the structure and molecular components of bacterial cells.
- Know the properties of virus and protozoa.
- Understand how microbes can cause infections and how the immune response reacts to pathogens.
- Describe the function of antibiotics and understand how the use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance.
- Explain the role of microbes in the manufacturing of medicines and how microbes give rise to contaminations.
- Describe sterilization processes and methods.
