Aim and overall content

The purpose is to introduce the students to new audiological measurement methods and at the same time train them to analyse scientific articles and based on them judge whether the new measurement methods can be used clinically.

Learning outcome:
The purpose is to introduce the students to new audiological measurement methods and at the same time train them to analyse scientific articles and based on them judge whether the new measurement methods can be used clinically.

Teaching methods:
Independent studies. Lectures. Group work. Presentations by the students. Short video guides

Examination:
The student is assessed on oral presentation during the semester and a final report

Link:
The presentations during the semester should enable the student to relate critically and discuss the scientific articles. The final assignment allows the student to gather their experiences and provide a more comprehensive argumentation than is usually possible in class.

Learning Objectives - Knowledge

At the end of the module, the student must:

  • have knowledge of Test-retest measurements (Bland-Altman plots)
  • have knowledge of Bias
  • have knowledge of Uncertainty
  • have knowledge of Specificity / sensitivity
  • have knowledge of power calculations
  • have knowledge of Relative and absolute risk
  • have knowledge of selected vestibular measurements
  • have knowledge of selected Audiological measurements

At the end of the module, the student must:

  • be able to evaluate new vestibular measurement methods based on scientific articles
  • be able to evaluate new audiological measurement methods based on scientific articles
  • be able to assess the uncertainty of new measurement methods
  • be able to assess the diagnostic value of measurement methods
  • be able to compare alternative measurement methods

Learning Objectives - Competencies

At the end of the module, the student must:

  • based on knowledge and skills discuss the advantages and disadvantages of new measurement methods based on scientific articles
  • based on knowledge and skills, could report in writing the quality of scientific studies describing new audiological measurement methods
  • based on knowledge and skills be able to assess the quality of new planned studies

Teaching format and feedback

Lectures, examinations, group work, exercises, self-study. Teaching is organized in such a way that it supports the FAIR principles of Activating Teaching and Active Learning.

The following are included: Independent studies. Lecture. Group work. Exercises. Each course will be a combination of discussion of articles and review of practical methods. Some of the demonstrations will be based in Matlab.

Feedback: Students will receive oral feedback on their presentations during the lessons and on the exercises that are done during the lessons. In addition, they will receive brief written feedback on their final assignments.
