Overall description learning objectives

Instruction will be organised with a focus on the central learning objectives for students as set out below. This will be supported by the chosen method of assessment, which will test and further students’ knowledge, skills and competences.

Learnings objectives - Knowledge

 At the end of the course, students should be able to

  • demonstrate knowledge in depth of different communication theories and cultural concepts as well as to the function of communications in intercultural encounters 
  • demonstrate knowledge of the standards, forms and functions of academic writing in the foreign language

Learning objectives - Skills

At the end of the course, students should be able to

  • apply the above theories and concepts in an analysis of intercultural communication and be able to assess and discuss the applied theory framework´s strengths and weaknesses 
  • master communication in the intercultural encounter 
  • apply and discuss relevant theory in relation to a self-selected communications related problem
  • formulate their position in accordance with the standards that apply to academic writing and communication of study results in the foreign language 

Learning objectives - Competences

At the end of the course, students should be able to
  • deal with cross-cultural cooperation and conflicts 
  • prepare a project on a scientific basis 

Content

Based on - but not limited to - the cultural concepts and communication theories that were covered in the foundation course on intercultural communication, work will be done on analyses of intercultural communication in the foreign language area (e.g. between minorities and majorities or the organisation´s internal cultural diversity) and/or between the foreign language area and Denmark. This work will culminate in the preparation of a project. Students will work on investigation and writing processes in their projects, including problem formulation, scientific argumentation, source handling, assignment structure, as well as the language and formalities of academic writing in the foreign language.

Forms of instruction and work

Instruction is organised in such a way that it upholds the humanities model of active learning and stimulating teaching outlined in the curriculum for the course of study. At the start of the course, the university teacher will inform the students about the organisation of study activities.

Instruction will alternate between lectures, case-oriented instruction, discussions, group work, as well as reviewing solutions for case assignments in the form of discussion panels.

Description

Method of assessment: Project with individual oral defence.

The examination consists of the preparation of a project report in the foreign language followed by an oral examination based on the written project, that is thus indirectly part of the evaluation. The report is prepared by groups of 2 to 3 students.

Additional information

Taking into consideration the method of assessment and the level of the Bachelor course 5th semester, emphasis will be placed on the degree to which student presentations fulfil the learning objectives, as well as to what degree the student has mastered the general competence goals specified in § 2, especially 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 16.

Evaluation: 7-point grading scale. A single grade is awarded as an expression of the overall assessment of the written project report and the individual oral defence.
