Overall description learning objectives

 Instruction will be organised with a focus on the central learning objectives for students as set out below. This will be supported by the chosen method of assessment, which will test and further students’ knowledge, skills and competences.

  • basic knowledge of history after 1848 
  • basic knowledge of current German society

Students can apply their basic knowledge to historical and societal circumstances that have been covered during the course and that are evident in the examination syllabus

The student can relate to current social conditions, expound on and discuss historical progress.

Content

The course is based on a number of current societal questions, analysed and discussed with the incorporation of relevant knowledge of historical developments and Germany´s position in Europe. The course will give an introduction to the broad contours of Germany´s historical development. 

Forms of instruction and work

Instruction is organised in such a way that it upholds the humanities model of active learning and stimulating teaching outlined in the curriculum for the course of study. At the start of the course, the university teacher will inform the students about the organisation of study activities.

Room 1 (Classroom, where the university teacher is responsible for scheduling and is in attendance): Group lessons.

Room 2 (Study room, where the teacher has planning responsibility, but is not present): exercises, problem-solving or work questions.

Room 3 (Classroom, where the university teacher is present but the students have planning responsibility): Student presentations or writing exercises.

Room 4 (Study room, where the students have scheduling responsibility and the university teacher is not in attendance): Independent studies.

Description

Method of assessment: Individual restricted take-home assignment.

Students will prepare a take-home assignment in December/January on the material covered. In the take-home assignment, the student must answer one or more questions related to one or more of the issues covered in the course. Questions must be answered by incorporating the course examination syllabus as well as one or more unknown texts. The assignment must be written in German. An ability to clearly present and discuss the current and historical issues is required.

Taking into consideration the Grading Scale Order, the method of assessment and level of the BA course, emphasis is placed on the degree to which the student’s presentation fulfils the above-mentioned learning objectives. Further emphasis in the assessment is placed on the degree to which the student masters the general competences, especially the

  • ability to systematise complex knowledge and data, as well as to select and prioritize elements that are significant for
  • the subject
  • display precise and consistent application of concepts
  • ability to focus and create coherence in the resolution of assignments
  • take a critical position on all sources used and document this using references, notes and bibliography

The grade is awarded in relation to the degree of fulfilment of the learning objectives as outlined in the Grading Scale Order. The evaluation pass/fail indicates whether the general and discipline-specific competences have, overall, been mastered to a sufficient degree.
