Academic preconditions
Students taking the course are expected to:
- Have knowledge of fundamental biology, chemistry and microbiology as taught in the courses BMB533 and BMB507.
- Have knowledge of literature search.
- Be able to use Word.
Course introduction
The aim of the course is to acquaint the students with the pathogenic properties and pathological importance of bacteria. The students get acquainted with the interaction between pathogenic bacteria and host organisms and they are introduced to the fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenic properties of bacteria. Furthermore the students are introduced to critical review methods of research publications, and will be able to reflect upon innovative asepcts of biomedical microbiology.
The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the courses BMB533 Molecular biology and protein chemistry, and BMB507 Fundamental Microbiology, and gives an academic basis to acquire knowledge related to topics within the area of molecular biology and infection-immunology later on in the study program.
In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:
- Give the competence to examine issues in subjects related to molecular biology and microbiology.
- Provide skills in critical review methods of original literature.
- Give knowledge and understanding of the pathological importance of bacteria.
- Provide skills in putting innovation into a scientific context, and illustrate the connections between innovation, bacteria and health.
Expected learning outcome
The learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:
- Give an account for the pathological importance of bacteria.
- Describe the interactions between bacteria and host-organisms.
- Describe the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial pathogenesis.
- Give an account for the basic molecular biological methods for investigation of host-pathogen interactions.
- Plan and carry out a theoretical project based on research publications.
- Search for relevant research publications and employ this information in relation to the project.
- Show possibilities for application-oriented use of theoretical knowledge
- Describe the overall concepts of innovation processes and their relevance for scientific innovation
Content
The following main topics are contained in the course:
- The biology of pathogenic bacteria.
- Host-pathogen relations.
- Virulence determinants of bacteria.
- Bacterial pathogenesis.
- The pathological importance of bacteria, including epidemiology, diagnostics, prevention and medical treatment of infectious disease.

Indicative number of lessons
Teaching Method
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 20 hours
Skills training phase: 10 hours, hereof tutorials: 6 hours and meetings with supervisor: 4 hours
The intro phase consists of lectures, where the dialogue primarily is created through discussions with fellow students and the teacher. The lectures provide an introduction to the topics and the path to competence achievement as a supplement to the literature (research articles), which the students are expected to study independently. The skills training phase is based on tutorials, where the students obtain skills in understanding the methods and results presented in original research articles and by meeting with one of the course lecturer (supervisor) on the project assignment. In the study phase, the students are expected to work independently with the literature (research articles) and the questions for the tutorials. Furthermore, the students are expected to enter a project group; the group will search for relevant literature (research papers) for the assignment and prepare questions before meeting with the supervisor. Finally, the project group will prepare a common project report.
Activities during the studyphase:
- Working on a project in groups of 5-6 students; search for literature; prepare for meetings with supervisor; prepare a project report.
- Independently prepare for tutorials; read research articles and prepare answers for study-questions.
