Course introduction

The aim of the course is to enable the student to evaluate the position of pharmaceuticals in society, which is important in relation to enter into interdisciplinary collaboration on the development, distribution and administration of pharmaceuticals and regulation of pharmaceuticals.

The course introduces the student to the drug market and its players. Furthermore disseminated medicinal location and importance in the Danish health. The student will gain insight into pharmaceutical market specific features, key players / stakeholders, including these actors business conditions, as well as rationales for regulation, effects and shapes of drug subsidies and patent rights.

The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the courses Mathematics and statistics for pharmacy

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:

  • Give the competence to discuss and assess the position of pharmaceuticals in the health care sector and their value for society, and to discuss various stakeholders interests within the area of pharmaceuticals
  • Give skills to analyse price formation of pharmaceuticals and conditions that influence supply, demand and use of pharmaceuticals
  • Give knowledge and understanding of legal aspects with relevance for pharmaceuticals and the Danish health care sector, statistics about use of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical prices, theoretical models for supply and demand and economic behaviour.

Expected learning outcome


  • Students should be able to define the concept of a pharmaceutical
  • Knowledge about consumption statistics and pharmaceutical prices
  • Describe key characteristics of the pharmaceutical market and the market for health care
  • Describe the development in the consumption of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical expenditures
  • Describe key actors in the Danish health care system and in relation to the pharmaceutical market
  • Discuss the rationale for regulation of the pharmaceutical market
  • Discuss consequences of regulation, e.g. subsidies and patents
  • Describe conditions that affect demand and supply for pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical prices.
