Course introduction
4+4 PhD students will after having passed the qualifying exam be awarded a Master's degree in the relevant field.
Expected learning outcome
A student who has completed the qualifying exam is expected to be able to:
• Use methods for theoretical and / or experimental studies relevant for the given discipline
• Use methods for theoretical and / or experimental studies relevant for the given discipline
• Evaluate issues within the chosen topic using a scientific approach, reasoning and terminology
• Propose qualified hypotheses and independently plan and carry out experimental and / or theoretical knowledge to carry out a specific research project

• Analyze and speculate on achieved results within the context of existing knowledge
• Structure and manage the execution of a research project and generate a conclusion that is commensurate with the time spent

Evaluation of the report: The qualifying exam is based on a written status report of app. 30 pages, supplemented by an oral examination.
Evaluation criteria:
The grade for the qualifying exam is determined on the basis of an assessment of both the status report and the oral examination. The assessment is based on the academic content, bearing in mind what is to be evaluated is the first two years of a 4 year research project and taking into account how these two years have been balanced between research, research planning, travel and course activity.
