Note: Participation in BMB803 is required
This course is an extension to BMB803. The laboratory exercises are carried out in part in a security-level 2 laboratory facility. Due to safety considerations the maximum number of participants is limited to 16.
The course has limited entry. The following 4 criterias are taken into consideration when seats are assigned.
Students with the most ECTS from their master
Students who are accepted conditionally on the master
Students who follows master courses concurrent with their bachelor programme
Bachelor students
If the score is even lots are drawn.
The academic enviroments at The faculty of science manages the prioritisation and at waiting list is established and will then be made aware from the faculty. The waiting list will not be transferred to the following year.
In order to keep the assigned seat you need to attend the first course day or notify the teacher, otherwise the seat is given to the next student from the waiting list.
Entry requirements
A Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biomedicine or similar subject. Participation in BMB803 is required
Academic preconditions
Students taking the course are expected to:
- Have fundamental knowledge of microbiology and immunology.
- Be able to use basic techniques within the area of microbiology and molecular biology.
Course introduction
The aim of the course is to prepare students to engage in the fight against bacterial infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance. Major themes of the exercises will be host-pathogen interactions and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance. The course will enable students to conduct experimental microbiology work under special safety precautions in a class 2 research laboratory. The course content will be adjusted continuously to reflect ongoing research in the laboratory.
The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the courses BMB507 Fundamental Microbiology, BMB510 Biomedical Microbiology and the theory acquired in BMB803 Molecular microbiology and provides an academic basis for experimentally addressing questions relating to bacterial infections and drug resistance – typically in a Masters project.
In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:
- Give the competence to carry out an experimentally based master’s project in clinical oriented molecular microbiology
- Provide the student with skills to work responsibly with pathogenic microorganisms
- Give knowledge and understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance.
Expected learning outcome
The following main topics are contained in the course:
- Infection Microbiology
- Molecular Biology and genetics
- Biochemistry
- Laboratory safety
Content
The learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:
- Acquire up to date theoretical and methodological knowledge based on the recent international research in key areas of microbiology and molecular biology.
- Discuss how this recent knowledge can be translated into concrete solutions to current societal problems, such as the rise of drug-resistant bacterial infections and safety in food production.
- Employ advanced tools, models and methods in microbiology and molecular biology.
- Critically evaluate experimental results and hypotheses within the course area.
- Act correctly and responsibly during work with pathogenic microorganisms in a security-level 2 laboratory.
- Present own results in a coherent manner to peers as well as to receive and provide constructive criticism.
- Adhere to the safety regulations of a level 2 laboratory facility.
- To foster the student’s ability to collaborate in teams on solving concrete tasks.

Teaching Method
The coursework is based on active participation during laboratory exercises. The relevant theoretical background is incorporated as the data are processed, interpreted and converted into a useful graphic format, which ultimately will be presented in plenum.
Activities during the study phase:
- Prepare for laboratory exercises by reading the manual
- Data processing
- Study relevant literature
- Write laboratory report
- Prepare presentation of results
