Entry requirements

At least 2 years of BSc study. 

Academic preconditions

Academic preconditions. Students taking the course are expected to:

  • Have knowledge of Natural or Technical science at the level of 2 years of bachelor study.
  • Have a basic level of programming experience corresponding to that contained in the first 2 years of a bachelor study in a technical or natural science topic.

Course introduction

The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the concept of new space and CubeSat mission and thereby enable them to follow a career within the space science or industry.

In particular, it is the explicit focus of the course to:

  • Give the competence to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Give skills to define requirements for a CubeSat mission and develop concepts for new CubeSat missions.
  • Give knowledge and understanding of the possibilities and limitation with CubeSat missions and the different subsystems on a CubeSat.

Expected learning outcome

The learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:

  • Understand the possibilities and limitation with CubeSat missions.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Account for the different subsystems on a CubeSat.
  • Define requirements for a CubeSat mission.
  • Develop concepts for new CubeSat missions.

Content

In the course the students will be introduced to the basic concepts of designing, building and operating a CubeSat.

The following main topics are contained in the course:

  • CubeSat mission design.
  • CubeSat launch opportunities.
  • CubeSat payloads.
  • CubeSat on-board data handling.
  • CubeSat communication.
  • CubeSat attitude determination and control systems.
  • CubeSat assembly, integration and verification.
  • CubeSat operation.
  • Space entrepreneurship.

Portfolio exam consists of:
Mandatory assignments during the course. These assignments may be solved in the interdisciplinary groups.
Oral exam.

Teaching Method

At the faculty of science, teaching is organized after the three-phase model ie. intro, training and study phase.
  • Intro phase: 35 hours
  • Training phase: 40 hours, hereof tutorials: 40 hours
Activities during the study phase:
  • Solution of weekly assignments in order to discuss these in the exercise sections.
  • Solving the project assigments
  • Self study of various parts of the course material.
  • Reflection upon the intro and training sections.
