Overall description learning objectives

The described learning objectives for knowledge, skills and competences will be supported by the specific forms of instruction and work methods as described below. At the same time the forms of instruction and work methods are organised in accordance with the form of examination as described under Examination requirements, which is considered to be the most appropriate frame for testing the student´s fulfilment of the learning objectives of the subject.

Learnings objectives - Knowledge

 The student must possess knowledge of:

  • the main features of British history and society since the beginning of the 20th century with emphasis on the most recent era 
  • key public institutions in the United Kingdom 
  • the values and forms of behaviour that characterise modern Britain
  • the primary factors that have had an impact on British history and society in the 20th century 

Learning objectives - Skills

 The student must be able to
  • use historical and social science methodologies in an analysis of modern history and society in the United Kingdom
  • communicate in focused English, both verbally and in writing, on the subject's topics 

Learning objectives - Competences

 The student must be able to

  •  analyse and understand the relationship between concrete issues and the social and historical context of which they are a part 

Content

The course gives an introduction to British history and social conditions over the last 100 years, approximately, with primary focus on recent history. A retrospective historical examination with relevance for understanding the current era may be incorporated. Societal evolution will be explored in its political, social, and economic aspects.

The development of the welfare state and the impact of historical events on all parts of the British Isles will be discussed, including Scotland and Northern Ireland's gradual political empowerment.

Forms of instruction and work

Teaching in the course may take place in the following forms: lectures, discussion and exercises.

Teaching is organised in such a way as to support the humanities model for active learning and activating teaching, cf. section Didactic, pedagogical basis and contact to research environment in the curriculum. The teacher must inform students about how study activities are organised on commencement of teaching. 

Feedback

  • In order to stimulate the students’ learning, collective and/or individual feedback is offered in connection with the exam assignment, depending on what the lecturer finds pedagogically or practically appropriate.

The teaching of the course activates the student in the following teaching spaces/learning spaces:

  • Teaching space where the university teacher has the responsibility for planning and is present
  • Study space where the university teacher has the responsibility for planning but is not present
  • Teaching space where the university teacher is present but the students have the responsibility for planning specific sub-activities
  • Study space where the students have the responsibility for planning, and the university teacher is not present

Workload

5 ECTS is equivalent to 140 working hours. The working hours are distributed between the activities described in the humanities model and listed under Forms of instruction and work as well as the exam including the preparation of this. The university teacher will provide an indicative distribution of the workload at the beginning of the course.

Description

 At the end of the semester, a restricted take-home assignment in English will be given based on the material covered: The 
 instructor will, in collaboration with the degree programme secretarial office, decide on and ensure notification of the deadline 
 for submission of the assignment.

Assessment criteria: 
Considering the method of assessment and the current study level, specific emphasis will be put on the extent to which the student´s performance meets the learning objectives as well as to what extent the student masters the general competence objectives mentioned in the currculum, section Aim of Programme, including any professional profile and specialistions, particularly no. 1, 2, 6 and 7 that the course pays special attention to.

The grade will be awarded according to the extent of the fulfilment of the learning objectives as described in the Grading Scale Order (karakterbekendtgørelsen).

Reexamination takes place in the same way as the ordinary examination.
