Academic preconditions

Students taking the course are expected to: Have knowledge of general chemistry , physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry

Course introduction

To provide the students with experimental and educational skills that enable teaching chemistry.

The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the courses at the Bachelor's degree or equivalent education.

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:

  • Give the competence to plan and implement chemical experiments for teaching

Expected learning outcome

The learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:
  • carry out chemical experiments for teaching after a submitted instruction
  • consider the risks of chemical teaching experiments
  • to put the experiments educational content into perspective
  • explain the high school chemistry teaching with regard to curricula, levels and textbooks.

Content

The course focuses mainly in the preparation and implementation of
experiments of general chemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry .

In addition to the preparation and implementation of experiments we will work with:
  • Performing a student experiment / how to write a report on the high school level?
  • Using data collection
  • A subject area
  • A day with microscale experiments

Literature

Haagensen & Parbo: Kemiske demonstrationsforsøg.
Håndbog: Risikovejledningen Fysik, Astronomi og Kemi.
Håndbog: Liste over farlige stoffer, Miljøstyrelsen.

Teaching Method

At the faculty of science, teaching is organized after the three-phase model ie. intro, training and study phase.

  • Training phase: 50 hours, including 50 hours tutorials

The entire course is laboratory exercises. The students will mainly perform demonstration experiments but also some student experiments.
The experiments are the topics that are in the curriculum in high school. The students get feedback from the teacher and the other students. In the study phase the students are supposed to prepare for the demonstration experiments and later for the oral examination.

In the skills training phase the students works with performance and presentation of chemical experiments for teaching. The students comment on each other’s presentation.
