Academic preconditions

You are a master's student in a natural science subject or a dual-major student with at least one natural science subject.

Course introduction

The purpose of the course is to provide students with a basic knowledge of subject didactics and lesson planning in the natural sciences, including mathematics. Thus, the course equips the student with the foundation to undertake teaching tasks primarily in secondary education.

The course offers an introduction to central topics from the didactics of mathematics and natural sciences and relates them to the practice of teaching. The course also introduces students to pedagogical and subject-didactic perspectives on teaching methods, including, for example, modeling as a tool for educational and learning outcomes, possibly in interaction between the natural science subjects. In the course, students work in groups on three self-chosen teaching projects, which are included in the individual student's course portfolio. The course meets the requirement for subject didactics to achieve teaching competence in high school in the natural science subjects mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology

Expected learning outcome

The course focuses on the following knowledge, skills, and competence objectives:

Providing competence to:
  • Describe, analyze, and evaluate pedagogical and subject-didactic justifications in natural science and mathematical teaching.
  • Plan, evaluate, and reflect on teaching sequences in natural science and mathematics, including interdisciplinary activities.

Providing skills to:
  • Outline short teaching activities based on pedagogical and subject-didactic reasons for choosing teaching methods and teaching materials.
  • Engage with central pedagogical and subject-didactic theories and assess their applicability as tools for and in organizing teaching practices.
  • Describe various teaching materials and assess their applicability and mutual interaction in relation to specific teaching and learning situations.
Providing knowledge about:
  • The formal basis for teaching the natural science subjects in the Danish education system.
  • Justifications for the placement of natural science subjects in the education system based on subject-didactic positions.

To achieve the course's objectives, the learning goal of the course is for the student to demonstrate the ability to:

Apply the course's knowledge, skills, and competence objectives to reflect on and develop practices within the teaching of natural science subjects at the secondary education level.

Content

The course covers the following main academic areas:
  • Subject didactics as a field of research.
  • The role of mathematics and natural sciences in the education system, justifications, and curricula.
  • Theories of learning and teaching, including analysis, assessment, and evaluation of teaching.
  • Teaching - planning and implementation.
