Overall learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to extract relevant principles of sensing and actuation from biological systems and apply them to technology.

Learning objectives - Knowledge

  • basic principles of biorobotics.
  • basic understanding of biological sensing and actuation.
  • understanding of how simple nervous systems work.
  • how to abstract principles from biology for engineering application.

Learning objectives - Skills

  • execution of simple techniques in experimental biology and implementation of their corresponding engineering models.
  • familiar with vocabulary in scientific publications in biology.
  • able to interpret scientific results in biological sciences.
  • able to model biological systems with engineering models and evaluating them.

Learning objectives - Competences

  • the ability to understand the neural bases of sensing and actuation in biological systems, and use the knowledge to build and evaluate corresponding engineering models.
  • the ability to interpret scientific research in biology and implement appropriate engineering models to validate the research technologically.

Content

  • Hands-on neurophysiology: simple animal experiments
  • Understanding simple neuron models and their equivalent engineering models
  • Implementing neuron models and building simple neural circuits for sensing, actuation and locomotion in Matlab
