Aim and purpose

A good strategy is worth little unless it is implemented successfully. “Performance Management” is designed to help you turn your firm’s strategy into performance results. This integrative course builds on the foundations of the MBA program in strategy and organization. The course provides you with a comprehensive approach that follows the implementation process: mapping your firm’s strategic choices and goals, aligning the organization to the goals, testing and adjusting the strategy, and establishing organizational conditions that foster performance. Participants will discuss a variety of frameworks (e.g., Balanced Scorecard, KPIs), well-tested tools (e.g., Strategy Maps, Objectives and Key Results), and several in-depth business cases that will clarify and enhance their thinking about strategy implementation and performance management. Moreover, an integral part of the course is the application of the course content to the participants' own organizations.

The interaction between strategies, goals, and performance management 
Decomposing strategies into goal systems / Balanced Scorecards

Day 2: Aligning the organization
Cascading the strategy and aligning the organization 
Designing meaningful performance measurement and evaluation systems 

Day 3: Testing and adapting the strategy
Separating good/poor strategy from poor/good execution (analytical performance management)
Reconciling execution and performance with strategic agility and innovation

Day 4: Creating a performance-driven organization
The role of organizational culture, HR policies, and leadership styles
Course review and preparation for the exam 

Learning goals

  • To identify, describe, and analyze performance-related problems based on relevant literature on business performance management
  • To select, discuss, and apply theories, models, and methods to develop solutions to performance-related problems
  • To categorize and describe changes in an organization’s approach to business performance management
  • To reflect on suggested solutions, based on the literature on business performance management

  • Demonstrate knowledge on the general course themes and problems
  • Demonstrate knowledge about specific models and methods of business performance management
  • Demonstrate knowledge about the theories and concepts underlying central approaches to business performance management

Demonstrate skills in such a way that they are able to:
  • Apply methods and models of business performance management to specific organizational situations and challenges
  • Assess and design business performance systems in a concrete organizational environment

Demonstrate competence in such a way that they are able to:

  • Apply methods and models to assess and (re-)design performance management systems in a reflected manner and based on sound conceptual underpinnings


  • The course draws on a selection of journal articles and book chapters that represent recent relevant research within strategic management, organization, and performance management.
  • In addition, course participants read and discuss a number of extensive business case studies that focus on specific performance management problems.
  • The final literature is announced in the reading plan that will be available in August at the latest.

Teaching Method

4 lecture days (7,5 lecture hours each) during the semester. 30 lecture hours in total.

The teaching language is English, but all class discussions can be in Danish. The exam can also be answered in Danish.

The exam is based on a case study and a set of questions that invite the application of the course concepts and frameworks to analyze the situation and development recommendations for action.


The expected workload is based on a guideline of 27 hours per ECTS credit point. For this course, this results in 135 hours. These hours are distributed across preparation and class attendance, preparation for the exam, and the exam itself.

The 135 work hours are distributed as follows:
Lectures: 30 hours
Preparation for lectures: app. 65 hours
Preparation for and the exam itself: app. 40 hours

Participation in re-examination requires participation in the ordinary exam in the same examination period. Hence, non-participation in the ordinary exam excludes from access to the re-examination.
