Recommended prerequisites

The course requires completion of courses in Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Econometrics at the BA level. This includes knowledge about growth theory from macroeconomics, utility maximization from microeconomics and linear regression models from econometrics. The basic knowledge can be acquired from Blanchard and Johnson’s Macroeconomics, Pearson; Varian’s Intermediate Microeconomics, Norton and Wooldridge’s Introductory Econometrics, South-Western.

Aim and purpose

The purpose is to provide an advanced treatment of the subject of economic growth and historical development. Sustained economic growth is the most important feature of world economic history, and it has changed the lives of billions of people. In the course we aim to understand the drivers of economic growth.

The course provides the students
  • With specialized knowledge on the topic of economic growth and historical development both in terms of theory and empirical work.
  • With the necessary skills to work with models within this field.
  • With competencies which help the students test hypotheses about economic growth and historical development.

Proximate factors in economic growth and historical development. 

Fundamental factors in economic growth and historical development. 

Causal inference and identification strategies.

To fulfill the goals of the course the students should:

  • Appreciate the empirical methods of articles that conduct quantitative analysis.
  • Appreciate some of the key debates among researchers in the field.
  • Appreciate the most important literature relevant to economic growth and historical development.

Demonstrate skills such that they are able to:

  • Analyze theoretical models as well as be able to provide intuition for central mechanisms.
  • Collect information on a topic within the field of economic growth.

Demonstrate competencies such that they are able to:

  • Apply their knowledge of empirical methods to articles that conduct quantitative analysis.
  • Discuss and evaluate the aforementioned articles.
  • Analyze economic data related to economic growth.

Literature

The literature will be based on journal articles, book chapters, reports, and lecture notes.

Lectures including student presentations.

The evaluation of the course has two elements (one grade is given):
  1. Written report, individual
  2. Oral examination, individual, 20 min. (without preparation) based on the report and the curriculum. 

The examination randomly tests the student's attainment of the course goals. 

A revised report can be handed in for the reexam.
