Academic preconditions

A knowledge of special relativity and quantum mechanics.

Course introduction

The student should after the course be able to understand the research literature in general relativity and cosmology and perform calculations and solve problems in the fields of general relativity and cosmology. This is important in order to be able to understand the Universe's origin, evolution and fate and ultimately answer the big questions about our own origin, but also for applications in satellite technology and aerospace. 

In relation to the course FY817: Introduction to Astrophysics and Cosmology, this course goes beyond the descriptive introduction In cosmology in the course FY817, and gives the student the basis in general relativity to calculate and solve problems in cosmology, providing a deeper and more fundamental introduction to cosmology. 

The course provides a scientific basis for making a master thesis in theoretical physics / cosmology, located later in the program. 

In relation to the competence profile, the course explicit focus on:
  • Provide skills to make analytical and numerical calculations in general relativity and cosmology.
  • Give competence to understand complex scientific theories and basic physical properties of the universe.
  • Provide skills in calculating and analyzing complex problems and critically evaluate scientific theories.
  • Provide knowledge of key concepts of general relativity and cosmology.

Expected learning outcome

After completing the course the student is expected to:
  • Explain knowledge of general relativity
  • Explain and discuss the basic phenomena in cosmology
  • Solve problems in general relativity and cosmology, including problems related to space, black holes, and the evolution of the universe.
  • Describe the evolution of the early Universe.

Content

General relativity: equivalence principle, covariant and contravariant tensors, curvature tensor, Einstein's equation, Black Holes, FRW metric.
Cosmology: Hubble redshift and microwave background radiation, cosmological models, the early Universe.

Teaching Method

In the study phase, students are expected to work with self-Study of the text book and examples and exercises herein. It also includes written assignments as key elements in the study phase, and students can expect feedback from a teacher. The students are also expected to use part of the study phase to pick up on skill training phase tasks as well as a reserve a small part for repetition up to the written exam.
