Mandatory prerequisites

This course is offered to students in Esbjerg on the programmes:
MSc in Economics and Business Administration - Marketing, Social Media, and Digitalization 
MSc in Economics and Business Administration - Sports and Event Management 

The course builds on the knowledge acquired from the courses in the four preceding quarters.

Aim and purpose

To give students the opportunity in a practical setting to use the empirical and theoretical knowledge they have acquired from the previous study on a specific problem in a company/organizational-setting. Through the project-oriented studies students moreover can get insight into organizational issues, processes, and working methods and to concrete market conditions under which the company may operate. The project-oriented studies studies, hence gives students the opportunity to gain insight into and understanding of some of the many challenges that a company meets.

Content

Theoretical reflections based on problem solving in practice. 

Learning goals

To achieve the purpose of the project-oriented studies, the learning goals of the course are that the student:

Description of outcome - Knowledge

  • Demonstrate that the student has participated actively and analytically in solving a problem related to business administration/economics.
  • Refer to theories and models relevant for the chosen problem in the scientific report and include and apply theory in a suitable manner.

Description of outcome - Skills

  • Disseminate findings from the project-oriented studies in a scientific report containing a log describing the tasks performed during the project-oriented studies as an appendix.
  • Formulate and delimit a practical problem in a scientific report.
  • Complete an appropriate analysis of the problem using relevant theory and empirical knowledge.
  • Put forward a conclusion on the task to the extent that the analysis has provided the needed answers to the given problem. It is important that the report shows a clear coherence between the analysis section and the action section i.e. the section that contains the suggested solutions to the given problem.

  • Apply concepts and frameworks from business economics to facilitate the solution of specific problems during the project-oriented studies.
  • Account for and reflect on the contents of the study program in the context of experiences when performing the tasks connected to the project-oriented studies.

The students must independently find relevant literature. 

Teaching Method

In agreement with the organization where the project-oriented studies takes place.

Project-oriented studies in a company. 15 ECTS is equivalent to approx. 405 hours of work. This means that the project-oriented studies can take up 55 working days. During this time, there must be time available to prepare a report. The student is responsible for making contact to the organization in which the project-oriented studies takes place. Schedule for the working days/hours is made in agreement between the student and the organization/company. The project-oriented studies can take place in a public or a private company / organization. 

The content of the project-oriented studies must be related to a specific project within the area of business economics or business administration in a broad sense but within the MSc program profile. The work to be performed in the project-oriented studies thus must include appropriate tasks, i.e. the student's work must have a specific academic content and include not only general office work or similar. 

There must be a written agreement between the student and the organization in which the project-oriented studies takes place concerning the learning purpose of the project-oriented studies as well as work organization and the target for the study report. Before the study period begins, the student contacts a teacher from the staff at University of Southern Denmark. The teacher must be involved in the preparation and signature of the project-oriented studies agreement. 

At the company/organization an employee must be appointed as a liaison between the university and the student. This person will also assist in resolving practical issues related to implementation of the project. 

The project-oriented studies agreement must as a minimum contain the following information: 

  • Name of organization/company at which the project-oriented studies takes place
  • Name and title of contact person at the study site 
  • Description of work content of the project-oriented studies 
  • Goal for the project report 
  • Period for project-oriented studies
  • Working hours per week

The signed project-oriented studies agreement must meet the conditions for approval and sent by e-mail to Student Services. 

The student may not receive payment for the project-oriented study, as a) the activity is an ECTS-bearing activity, and b) the student may receive SU during the study. Reimbursement for some expenses or a monthly payment for confirmed expenses can however be granted during the study. If repayment/reimbursement is received, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure, whether it is taxable or not.   

Companies and organizations can give students in unprofitable projectoriented courses and on unpaid study stays an acknowledgment of up to DKK 3,000 a month.

Students who participate in projectoriented courses abroad may receive a salary if there is a legal requirement for minimum wages in the country in question.

Workload

15 ECTS is equivalent to 405 hours of work.

This means that the project-oriented studies can take up to 55 working days equivalent to approx. 305 hours of work in the organization/company. Writing a report of 25 to 35 pages - approx. 100 hours of work.

Additional information

Agreement on the project-oriented studies must be signed and approved by profile responsible before the start of the period for the project-oriented studies. 

Report containing the solution of the specific assignment that has been agreed upon in the project-oriented studies agreement, reflection on learning and contents of the study programme in the context of the project-oriented studies, and a log of task during the project-oriented studies as an appendix. The log must contain a description of workload in hours allocated to major tasks across the weeks of the project-oriented studies

The report must demonstrate that the student meets the objective referred to in the goals description.
