Mandatory prerequisites

You must have completed two years of engineering studies. Furthermore, knowledge of basic fluid mechanics is required

Learning objectives - Knowledge

•Dimensional analysis, flow similarity and model studies

• Experiences with different measurement technologies for experiments in fluids such as basic properties, pressure, velocity and load cell balance

•Wind Tunnel design, calibration and instrumentation

•Water Tunnel and visualization

•Boundary layer theory and measurement

•Aerodynamics of airfoils such as lift and drag measurement

•Airfoil enhancement by use of aerodynamics devices such as vortex generators

• Design and analyses of experiments, e.g. data acquisition, experimental uncerainty and measurement error

Learning objectives - Skills

• Ability to analyze collected data from an experiment

• Ability to design an experiment in fluid mechanics

Learning objectives - Competences

• Document the result from laboratory experiments in a report

• Planning and conducting experiments in fluid mechanics

Content

This course introduces methods and techniques for measurement and data analysis in experimental fluid mechanics, Students will learn to conduct aerodynamics performance test of airfoil in both wind tunnel and water tunnel.

The obtained knowledge will be applied in a design process for aerodynamic devices for wind turbine blades. Performance test for add-ons (e.g. vortex generators) to change the flow separation on the blades will be examined. The potential increase in efficiency will be evaluated with reference to a clean airfoil.

Teaching Method

The Faculty of Engineering has adopted a student-centered approach to learning, and teaching is based on problem-based project work. Students participate significantly in class and carry out project work in small teams. The experimental work, data analysis and reporting will be done in teams. The course is a combination of theory lectures, experiments, data analysis and laboratory report.

Time of classes: 2 weeks in August.

Additional information

The enrollment is limited to 12 students. If more applicants than places, applicants who meet the mandatory requirements are prioritised according to the below selection criteria:

  1. Undergraduate and graduate students from partner universities (exchange); international undergraduate and graduate guest students (fee-paying); undergraduate and graduate students from other Danish universities.
  2. Ph.D students from partner universities and other international Ph.D. students; other applicants.

Students are prioritised on a first come, first served basis, i.e. according to the time we receive your complete application.

In case a course is filled up, we try to offer you an alternative course from your list of priorities. All final decisions about admission will be sent out continually.
