Mandatory prerequisites

Enrolled in an engineering, social science or business bachelor’s degree program or the equivalent.

Recommended prerequisites

Basic prior knowledge about sustainability and/or, supply chain management is an advantage.

Overall learning objectives

The overall goal is to ensure that the students are familiar with the challenges, enablers and related practices to implementing circular economy strategies in supply chain management and understand which are the main tools that can help businesses to become more sustainable and contribute towards the SDG roadmap.

Learning objectives - Knowledge

The students gain knowledge about:

  • Importance of the circular economy principles applied to supply chain management context ( ie, procurement, manufacturing, logistics and warehousing)
  • The SDG framework and it’s contribution to improve the value creation in business and supply chain context
  • Implementation of the circular economy principles in companies through the SDG framework
  • CE-specific tools, strategies and technologies that can contribute to create a more efficient production system
  • Impact of digitalization in the supply chain functions that promotes circularity and SDG attainment

Learning objectives - Skills

After attending the course, the students possess skills to:

  • Analyse the strategic challenges faced by modern organizations in today’s global business environment towards CE implementation
  • Analyse the enablers that promote the CE implementation in global supply chain contexts
  • Analyze challenges in a systematic way related to circular economy and SDGs
  • Identify specific actions/practices to support supply chains in the implementation of circular economy and SDGs attainment
  • Analyze specific tools, strategies and technologies in procurement, production/manufacturing, logistics and warehouse activities to create a more efficient production system
  • Able to design businesses that create value through the implementation of CE related practices
  • How businesses can create value by 6R / 9R practices (reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, redesign and remanufacture) 
  • How business can create value by implementing closed loop supply chains and reversed logistics

Learning objectives - Competences

The students develop competencies about:

  • Develop an ability to take decisions that create economic, environmental and social value to the business on both local and global contexts
  • Handling CE specific tools and strategies to promote sustainable competitive advantage for the businesses
  • Able to connect to the SDG framework by addressing the CE among the business and supply chain contexts

Content

Sustainability is one of the key issues of today’s society as confirmed by increasing attention of governments, media, academics and industry. The idea of the Circular Economy is underpinned by systems approaches to the complex issues of sustainability. This requires the adoption of innovative approaches in educating both the engineering and business students to take their place in the economy of the future, incorporating systems thinking and collaboration skills. 

Hence, the main goal of the summer school course is to zoom in on the circular economy principles and the SDG framework in order to support businesses with practical tools in facing sustainability related global challenges. This course will apply the Design and systems approach to solve business and engineering tasks. To help companies to gain sustainable competitive advantage through their businesses, students will learn about the concepts such as CE, SDG, and their implementation in supply chain management. Additionally, the course introduces how companies can work with specific tools, strategies and technologies in different supply chain activities (i.e., procurement, manufacturing, logistics and warehouse) in order to support companies embracing sustainability and help them to move towards the SDG roadmap.

Enrolment is limited to 40 students. If more applicants than places, applicants who meet the mandatory requirements are prioritized according to the below selection criteria:
