Mandatory prerequisites

Before commencing the bachelor project, the student must have passed at least 120 ECTS courses. (students at the special credits programme for AP Graduates must have passed 90 ECTS based on credit transfer and an additional 30 ECTS courses on the credit transfer programme at SDU).

Recommended prerequisites

Knowledge and skills in the application of theories and methods contained in the compulsory subjects in the study program.

Aim and purpose

The bachelor project completes the education. The purpose of the project is that the student gains competences to contribute to the management of complex and development oriented problems within the field of business economics and business administration. The student should be able to do so independently and professionally and in an ethically responsible way. The aim is that the student gains competences in identifying own learning needs and in structuring own learning to solve a specific problem. In addition, the student should acquire skills in using the knowledge and the skills gained during the study for assessment and solving of complex problems within business economics and business administration. Finally, the student should gain skills in communicating problems and solutions to colleagues and other stakeholders.

Content

The students prepare in groups of 2-3 persons, or individually, a bachelor project under guidance an academic analysis and reporting of a self-chosen problem. The topic may have a theoretical starting point, be based on a wonder or curiosity about a practice-related issue or arise from a collaboration with a company. Regardless of whether a theoretical problem or a practical oriented problem is chosen, it is expected that the problem solving is well-founded in theories, methods and practices within the subject's subject areas. Projects focusing on theoretical issues should include examples or discussion of the issue's relevance to business economics practice

The supervisor is allocated via a digital form. To enable supervisor allocation, the form including group composition and prioritized choice of topic or idea for self-defined topic with a preliminary problem must be submitted by the deadline stipulated on the study webpage for the bachelor project. Each group submits one form. Link to digital supervisor agreement may be found on study web page under “Bachelor project”.

The chosen problem defines the academic content. With the topic as a starting point, the students decide the specific problem, the academic frame and choice of method in collaboration with the allocated supervisor. A working title and preliminary description of the problem and research questions must be approved by a given deadline (see under examination conditions).
Procedure for allocation of supervisor and group formation as well as time for information meeting is announced on the study web page under “Bachelor project”.

Learning goals

It is the goal of the bachelor project that the student in a written report that complies with general scientific standards, and in an oral presentation and a discussion of the content of the report, demonstrates
• knowledge of theory, methodology and practice within the chosen subject areas
• understanding and reflection on theories, methodology and practices within the chosen subject area
• skills in selecting among theories, methods and practices within the line's subject areas
• skills in applying selected theories, methods and practices for identifying and solving a problem within one or more of the subject areas
• proficiency in communicating academic problem statements solutions hereof to fellow professionals and other stakeholders
• the ability to independently take responsibility for own professional development and
• competence to organize and manage project work through a professional and ethically responsible approach

Specifically, this means that the student should be able to:

Description of outcome - Knowledge

• Select, argue and structure a precise and relevant problem statement within one or more subject areas for the chosen line.
• Select, explain and show an understanding of theories, methods and practices relevant to the chosen problem, be it knowledge that was previously acquired in the study program as well as additional updated knowledge based on international research within the subject areas of relevance to the problem.

Description of outcome - Skills

• Formulate a problem statement that is well structured, accurate and unambiguous as well as realistic regarding the resources devoted to the project.
• Identify, select and justify a relevant theoretical frame of reference for the analysis of the problem. To the extent possible, the knowledge gained earlier in the program is expected to be expanded or further developed with additional updated knowledge based on international research within the subject areas relevant to the problem related to subjects that are central to the problem.
• Apply the knowledge acquired in relation to the chosen problem and, in this context, assess the need for additional knowledge / information and explain how this can be achieved.
• Prepare and carry out an analysis of the problematic research questions; This is done using methods - theoretical or empirical - so that the analysis and the solution to the research questions meet the academic and professional standards in the field.
• Present the results of the study as well as their documentation and reflect on their reliability, validity and generalisability.

Description of outcome - Competences

• Complete the project work within the stipulated time.
• Relate the results of the analysis to the problem and make a conclusion based on that.
• Formulate theoretical and practice-related implications in a broader.

Literature

Depends on the choice of topic. The students should include academic literature beyond the syllabus and other textbooks.

Teaching Method

An information session about the project will always be held for the spring classes and dependent on the number of students for the autumn classes.

The bachelor project must be done in a group of 2-3 students, or individualy. As the purpose of the course is that the student gets an opportunity to demonstrate the skills that are described in the goals the description, the student works independently with a topic of own choice within business economics or business administration. During the project work, each group receives supervision corresponding to 8, 11, or 14 working hours for projects with 1, 2 or 3 students, respectively, including the supervisor’s preparation for meetings as well as correspondence via email and in other forms. Supervision may take place as supervision of each group individually. It may also take on other forms such as joint information- or supervision meetings for several groups. Plan for joint supervision will appear on the study web page for the bachelor project or as information from the supervisor.
The students are expected to participate in joint supervision and the topics that are covered in this way can thus only be covered by group wise supervision after specific agreement with a supervisor.

Workload

The list below shows the expected workload for an average student. For a group, the project work should reflect the number of group members. The problem for the project and the analyses undertaken must reflect the workload.

Independent project work 500
Supervision (preparation and participation) 20
Exam (preparation and participation) 20
Total 540 per student.

Additional information

The project must be done in groups of 2-3 students, or individually. The Academic Study Board may, based on reasonable cause, allow students to work in larger groups.

The number of pages allowed in the submitted report is a maximum of 30, 45 or 60 standard pages for groups of 1, 2 or 3 students, respectively. One standard page comprises 2400 key strokes including spaces. The number of pages allowed is in addition to front page, table of contents, abstract, list of references and appendices. The report must be written in the language that the programme is offered in. If the programme is offered in Danish, the report may be written in English in agreement with the supervisor. The report is to include an abstract in English or another language in agreement with the supervisor. The abstract will be included in the assessment of the report. The length is max. 2 pages.

The title in Danish (if the report is written in Danish) and in English (always - regardless of the language the report is written in) must be written on the front page and in a digital form which must be filled in when the report is submitted. There is a link to the form on the web page for the bachelor project.

The report must meet the “Formalities For written assignments applying to programmes in economics and business administration” The report is to be submitted in via SDUassignment on Black Board.

The oral exam is completed in groups or individually. For students who have made the written report in a group, oral defense is completed as a group exam with individual assessment of the individual's performance. The examiner ensures that the oral defense is conducted so that an individual assessment can be made of the individual's performance. The individual student can choose that the defense is carried out individually. This must be notified to the study administration upon submission of the bachelor project.
The oral examination lasts approx. 30, 45 or 60 minutes for projects with 1, 2 or 3 students, respectively. , including grading. The examination takes its starting point in the report and a presentation hereof. The examination also includes supplementary questions on theoretical, methodological and, if relevant, practical topics associated with the submitted report.

The grading is based on an overall assessment of the report and the performance at the oral exam. Grades are awarded on the basis of how well the individual student has achieved the objectives of the subject as described in "Goals Description".

Supplementary information on reexam in the same examterm:
Students having participated in the ordinary examination and who have received the grade 00 or -3 will take the oral exam based on report submitted for the reexam within the same subject. The report can be the same report which was handed in for the ordinary examination, but can also be a revision of the report handed in for the ordinary examination.

The students receive no supervision except for a justification for their grade in the ordinary exam.
If the re-exam only regards some of the group members, students and their supervisor may agree of a new revised problem statement taking the student's respective contributions to the original submitted report in consideration.

Re-exam in a later examination period is in a new project within a new topic following the procedure for the first attempt.
