Mandatory prerequisites

You must have completed at least two years of studies in chemical engineering, environmental engineering or environmental science.

Learning objectives - Knowledge

By the end of the course the student will have acquired:
  • A fundamental understanding of bioenergy production from waste biomass
  • Ability to explain technological potentials and obstacles of 2nd generation biofuel production
  • Ability to describe biomass energy potential and biodegradability
  • Understanding of sequential bioenergy production with zero carbon approach
  • Ability to describe biochemical processes of biomass conversion to bioenergy production
  • Understanding of technical operation conditions of bioreactors
  • Understanding of technological potentials and obstacles of 2nd generation biofuel production
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of various pretreatment technologies.

Learning objectives - Skills

By the end of the course the student should:
  • Have a comprehensive and balanced approach to bioenergy production from different biomasses
  • Ability to conduct methane potential tests of waste biomass
  • Ability to implement new biomasses to bio-energy production

Learning objectives - Competences

By the end of the course the student should be able to:

  • Design an entire biogas plant process
  • Optimize operation
  • Predict overall energy potential both at a national and a plant level
  • Propose a holistic strategies of biomass utilization for energy production scenarios
  • Optimise production process to avoid inhibition
  • Predict real energy yields depended on operational condition
  • Set strategies for high rate biogas production and strategies to avoid inhibition in bioreactors
  • Choose best available feedstock mixture (Co-digestion) and propose optimal and economically viable technical operational condition
  • Plan and establish the entire process of a real- scale biogas plant
  • Propose suitable biofuel technologies and biofuel products from selected biomasses
  • Propose holistic strategies of biomass utilization for energy production.

Content

The aim of this course is to enable the student to have fundamental understanding of bioenergy production processes adequate to diverse biomass characteristics and to introduce state-of-the-art technologies of 2nd generation biofuels from sustainable bioresources. This course will provide a comprehensive and balanced approach to bioenergy production fundamental theories and industrial application.

During the course, the student will learn about biomasses conversion fundamentals for bioenergy production; important physio- and biochemical characteristics of biomasses affecting production process and energy yields; and process biochemistry and operation conditions. Moreover, the student will learn to employ this knowledge to design an entire biogas plant process and optimize operation.

Finally, the student will learn to conduct methane potential analysis of waste biomasses and will attain knowledge about energy potentials of a broad spectrum of biomasses.

Additional information

Please note that due to the uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic this course will be offered as a blended course in 2020; i.e. the course is offered both online and on campus. If physical presence is not possible, the course will still run online.

Enrollment is limited to 15 students. If more applicants than places, applicants who meet the mandatory requirements are prioritised according to the below selection criteria:
  1. Undergraduate and graduate students from partner universities (exchange); international undergraduate and graduate guest students (fee-paying); undergraduate and graduate students from other Danish universities.
  2. Ph.D students from partner universities and other international Ph.D. students; other applicants.

Students are prioritised on a first come, first served basis, i.e. according to the time we receive your complete application.

In case a course is filled up, we try to offer you an alternative course from your list of priorities. All final decisions about admission will be sent out continually.
