Mandatory prerequisites

Knowledge of object oriented programming. 

The course is similar to courses offered on the study programmes in Robot Systems Engineering and therefore NOT available to robotics students from SDU. 

Learning objectives - Knowledge

Having completed this course, the successful student possesses knowledge on an introductory level about:

  • UAS applications and current research
  • UAS platforms, control surfaces, power systems, system integration, ground control systems
  • UAS flight controller hardware and software
  • UAS positioning, navigation, route planning
  • UAS wireless communication systems
  • UAS legislation, safety & risk assessment, operations planning

Learning objectives - Skills

Having completed this course, the successful student is able to:

  • Apply robotics competencies to the design and development of unmanned aircrafts
  • Show and overall understanding of the applicability of UAS technology to problems in different domains

  • Participate in finding technical applicable solutions to the design and development of UAS subsystems and payload modules
  • Contribute to the development in research and industrial UAS projects

Introduction to Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) technology

Teaching Method

This course will teach you the basics of drone technology hardware, software and systems. This course involves introduction to the UAVs theories and technologies followed by laboratory exercises in SDU Drone Lab and SDU UAS Test Center at the airport. Based on the knowledge and experiences you gain during this course you will build and fly a multirotor UAV outside at the airport (in teams of 3-4 students). Throughout the course, focus will be on integration of components and subsystems required for a drone platform.

Please note that due to the uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic it has been decided that this course will only be offered if physical presence on campus is possible; otherwise it will be cancelled.

Please note that registration for this course is binding. The course is not available to robotics students from SDU. 

Enrolment is limited to 15 students. If more applicants than places, applicants who meet the mandatory requirements are prioritised according to the below selection criteria: 
  • Engineering students from SDU-TEK provided the course is approved as an elective on their study programmes 
  • Other students from SDU provided the course is approved as an elective on their study programmes  
  • Other students from SDU-TEK with preapproval of credit transfer 
  • Other students from SDU with preapproval of credit transfer 

Note: If further selection criteria are needed this will be based on a first-come-first-served basis.
