Aim and purpose

The aim of the course is to understand how the EU works and how it can meet the challenges it faces and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals against the backdrop of a world shaped by ever more rapid technological changes.
The course will represent an innovative interfaculty approach to learning about the EU and how the EU can be used to meet the challenges facing both Europe and the rest of the world today and in the future. The course aims to break down disciplinary silos and to present a structure facilitating cooperation between students from the TEK, SAMF, and HUM faculties, by encouraging them to take an interdisciplinary approach to critical global sustainable development problems.

Content

Week 1: 15 hours of class teaching 
  • 1.Fundamentals of EU policy shaping 
  • 2.The EU’s role in the global SDG agenda: leadership and delivery
  • 3.Internal EU policies: European climate regime
  • 4.Internal EU policies: European digital policy 
  • 5.External policies: SDG-proofing EU trade policy 
Week 2: 5 hours of project-related supervision; most of the week is devoted to a group-based policy advice exercise (policy brief)
  • 6.Tracking EU policy-making in practice
  • 7.Providing policy advice
Week 3: 10 hours of class teaching 
  • 1.Theories of integration
  • 2.Europeanization 
  • 3. Differentiated integration
  • 4. European democracy under pressure
  • 5.Working in an international environment: with a focus on selection procedure (EPSO concours) and practical skills (ex: meeting skills and writing a policy brief)

Description of outcome - Knowledge

  • Understand the significance of EU policy-making for domestic and global politics
  • Understand how EU policies are made and the forces that shape them, including technological development

Description of outcome - Skills

  • Advise policy-makers or stakeholders about specific topics.
  • Be able to critically apply a variety of theories and concepts to specific topics;
  • Be cognizant with EU-related professional and academic opportunities and selection procedures; and formulate a plan to be an effective candidate.  

Description of outcome - Competences

  • Consider critical 21st challenges from different disciplinary perspectives; and learn to use interdisciplinary, multinational, and innovation-oriented teaching situations constructively;
  • Have a deeper understanding of the political, social, and technological forces shaping the EU;
  • Be able to reflect on ways to improve EU-based formulation and delivery of the SDGs.

Additional information

The policy advice paper must be submitted in order for the student to present him/herself to the oral defense/oral examination.

The oral examination will be based both on the policy advice paper (50%) and the examination syllabus (50%). 

Regarding re-examination during the same examination period:  

The student(s) will be given the opportunity to modify their policy advice paper from the ordinary examination. In this case, the assignment must include a paragraph taking into account and explaining the changes made to the version that was handed in for the ordinary examination. This paragraph is not included in the maximum number of pages.
