Aim and purpose

The aim of the course is to understand how the EU works and how it can meet the challenges it faces and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals against the backdrop of a world shaped by ever more rapid technological changes.
The course will represent an innovative interfaculty approach to learning about the EU and how the EU can be used to meet the challenges facing both Europe and the rest of the world today and in the future. The course aims to break down disciplinary silos and to present a structure facilitating cooperation between students from the TEK, SAMF, and HUM faculties, by encouraging them to take an interdisciplinary approach to critical global sustainable development problems.

Content

Week 1: 
  • 1.Fundamentals of EU policy shaping 
  • 2.The EU’s role in the global SDG agenda: leadership and delivery
  • 3.Internal EU policies: European climate regime
  • 4.Internal EU policies: European digital policy 
  • 5.External policies: SDG-proofing EU trade policy 

Week 2:
5 hours of project-related supervision; most of the week is devoted to a group-based policy advice exercise (policy brief)
  • 6.Tracking EU policy-making in practice
  • 7.Providing policy advice

  • Understand the significance of EU policy-making for domestic and global politics
  • Understand how EU policies are made and the forces that shape them, including technological development

  • Advise policy-makers or stakeholders about specific topics.

  • Learn to consider critical 21st challenges from different disciplinary perspectives; and learn to use interdisciplinary, multinational, and innovation-oriented teaching situations constructively.

Additional information

The policy advice paper to be submitted must focus on a real-life EU policy-making decision. The objective of the paper is to step into the shoes of a protagonist’ (policy-maker, stakeholder, societal group, citizen, etc) facing the critical ‘what would you do next’ question.

Regarding re-examination during the same examination period:  

The student(s) will be given the opportunity to modify their assignment from the ordinary examination. In this case, the assignment must include a paragraph taking into account and explaining the changes made to the version that was handed in for the ordinary examination. This paragraph is not included in the maximum number of pages.
