Overall description learning objectives

Instruction will be organised with a focus on the central learning objectives for students as set out below. This will be supported by the chosen method of assessment, which will test and further students’ knowledge, skills and competences.

Learnings objectives - Knowledge

At the end of the course, students should be able to

  •  demonstrate familiarity with various theories of communication and cultural concepts as well as to the function of communication in intercultural encounters.

At the end of the course, students should be able to

  •  apply the above-named theories and concepts in analyses of intercultural communication as well as evaluate and discuss the applied theory frameworks´ strengths and weaknesses. 
  • master communication in the intercultural encounter.

  • deal with cross-cultural cooperation and conflicts. 

Content

Cultural concepts and communication theories that constitute the basis for various theories of intercultural communication will be examined. The theories may be applied to an examination of analyses of intercultural communication in the foreign language area (for example, between minorities and majorities, or an organisation's internal cultural diversity) and/or between the foreign language area and Denmark. Additionally, the subject will include discussions of identity and stereotype formation with particular reference to their function and problems in intercultural communication, as well as group dynamics and management of cooperation and conflicts across cultures. In addition, the significance of intercultural skills will be introduced - cognitive, affective and behavioural skills. Problematic issues regarding linguistic resources (for example, multilingualism and a lingua franca) may be incorporated.

Forms of instruction and work

Instruction is organised in such a way that it upholds the humanities model of active learning and stimulating teaching as set out in the curriculum for the course of study. At the start of the course, the university teacher will inform the students about the organisation of study activities.

Instruction will alternate between lectures, case-oriented instruction, discussions, group work, as well as reviewing proposed solutions to the case assignments in the form of panel discussions.

Description

Method of assessment: Synopsis with oral examination.

In the synopsis, students must account for the theories and methods applied to examine and elucidate the research question and briefly summarise the conclusion. At the examination, students must present their subject in a presentation lasting approximately 10 minutes. This presentation is followed by a dialogue between the students and the examiner. During the examination, supplementary questions may be posed from within the sphere of the examination syllabus.

Further emphasis in the assessment is placed on the degree to which the student masters the general competences, especially points 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15 and 16.

One grade is given for verbal language skills and one grade for the content. In cases of re-examination, that part of the examination that was graded less than 02 must be re-taken.
