Comment

The course with this title is offered last time E18. From E19, the course continues with the title FY829. Students who fail to pass FY821 can, after E18, instead participate in FY821.
07012901 (former UVA) is identical with this course description.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in Physics, or similar subject area or a minor in Physics.

Academic preconditions

Students taking the course are expected to: Have knowledge of the topics from Electromagnetism I and II (FY503 and FY506) or Electromagnetism (FY534), Thermal Physics I and II (FY523 and FY524), Introductory quantum mechanics I (FY521) and Physics of condensed matter (FY508).

Course introduction

The aim of the course is that students become familiar with modern methods in experimental physics.

The course builds on the knowledge acquired in previous experimental courses in the physics curriculum, and provides an academic basis for using topics from research in experimental physics in later projects and in the master project.

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:

  • Give the competence to conduct advanced physical experiments in a broad range of topics.
  • Give the skills to conduct and interpret advanced physics experiments and critically evaluate own results as well as literature results.
  • Give knowledge on physical techniques used in the research at SDU and knowledge about current research topics.

Expected learning outcome

The learning objectives of the course are that the student demonstrates the ability to:
  • Describe the phenomenological background of the techniques used and assess their applications.
  • Work with advanced scientific measurement equipment (under supervision), and implement quantitative data processing.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate orally and in writing the outcome of own results and results from relevant scientific literature.

Content

The following main topics are contained in the course:
  • Scanning probe microscopy / AFM
  • Ellipsometry.
  • Quantum optics
  • Optical Microscopy

Literature

See Blackboard for syllabus lists and additional literature references.

Teaching Method

At the faculty of science, teaching is organized after the three-phase model ie. intro, training and study phase.

The course is divided in 4 parts corresponding to the 4 different subject areas. Within each part, a theoretical introduction is given to the subject area and the corresponding experimental methods. This is followed by a laboratory session on research equipment, conducted as mixture of demonstrations and hands-on experiments.

After completion of each laboratory session, each team submits a report. Reading material and/or journal articles will provided, describing the background of the experiments.

Activities during the study phase:
  • Independent study of reading material describing the physical techniques.
  • Analysis of data collected during lab exercises. Writing of group reports.
