Comment
The course with this title is offered last time E18. From E19, the course continues with the title FY828. Students who fail to pass FY802 can, after E18, instead participate in FY828.
07007201 (former UVA) is identical with this course description.
Entry requirements
Academic preconditions
Students taking the course are expected to have knowledge of thermodynamics and equilibrium statistical mechanics.
Course introduction
Insight into methods, models and phenomena in modern statistical physics.
The course builds on the knowledge acquired in a bachelor education in physics, in particular the course Thermal physics, and gives the knowledge basis needed for studying topics in physics of condensed matter that are placed later in the education.
Expected learning outcome
The learning objectives of the course is to make the student able to:
- Apply relevant models of equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena in systems with many degrees of freedom
- Apply relevant numerical methods
- Validate and interpret the results of both simulations and theoretical analyses
- Critically examine different levels of description for the same physical phenomenon
Content
The following main topics are part of the syllabus:
- Non-equilibrium statistical mechanics: stochastic processes, master equations, irreversible thermodynamics, continuity equations, and transport coefficients.
- Critical phenomena and renormalization theory: 2nd order phase transitions, critical exponents and scaling at a critical point, renormalization and scale invariance, dynamical critical phenomena.

Teaching Method
At the faculty of science, teaching is organized after the three-phase model ie. intro, training and study phase.
Activities during the study phase:
- Study of the teaching material
- Exercises and projects
