Aim and purpose

In today’s globalized world we need to be able to deal with the increased complexity, dynamics and connectivity of doing business. Intercultural competences are a must-have for all executives and managers encountering intercultural business relationships both internally within the organization and externally with business partners and consumers. The objective of this course is to improve the intercultural competences of executives and managers in terms of interacting and communicating with colleagues, consumers, employees and business partners, adapting to diverse intercultural environments and workforces, and strategically responding to cultural tensions and changes.

You will be provided with (i) state-of the art knowledge and research findings about various aspects of working interculturally, such as culture, intercultural competence, cultural marketing strategy, global leadership and expatriate management. You will also improve (ii) your intercultural competences through various exercises, cases and activities, and we stimulate you to reflect on your own experiences in intercultural contact.

After following the course, you will be able to resolve various challenges emerging from contact between cultures and fast-paced cultural change, for instance when interacting with colleagues from a different cultural background, working with suppliers from different cultures, interacting with a multicultural customer base, collaborating in global virtual teams, being sent on international assignments, or when developing strategies that respond to cultural tensions and changes.

Content

Day 1: What is culture?
  • Introduction, sharing of (inter)cultural issues and challenges in the participants’ workplaces
  • Understanding the concept of culture
  • Becoming culturally competent in the business world
  • Cultural strategy workshop (How to develop strategies that respond to cultural tensions and changes)

Day 2: Developing intercultural competence, and global leadership
  • Intercultural competence in today’s globalized world
  • What is a global leader and how can global leaders be developed?
  • Assessment of intercultural competence and reflection on these scores
  • First step towards developing intercultural competence through several activities
Day 3: Developing intercultural competence, and expatriation
  • Expatriation as developmental experience
  • Other ways of developing intercultural competence
  • Continuation of developing intercultural competences through debrief of homework exercises and new activities.

Day 4: In depth explorations

Three to four different themes with problem solving team exercises will be offered, each of which address a specific real-life problem area related to culture and divergent ways of doing things. These may represent areas within virtual teams, organizational diversity, transnationalism, intercultural negotiations, challenges in marketing, sales and communication. The first part of the day is to analyze and identify the problem and develop alternative solution models by employing suitable theoretical and experiential knowledge. The second part of the day is presenting and discussing the proposed solution to other teams. Peer-group assessment focuses on the pros and cons of the proposed approaches. Further improvements and constructive criticism are discussed across teams, while best practices are selected together. A common discussion on learning take-aways concludes the day.
