Entry requirements
Academic preconditions
The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the course KE505.
Academic preconditions. Students taking the course are expected to:
- Have knowledge of molecular structure and properties
- Are familiar with basic classes of organic molecules
- Be able to propose mechanisms of organic reactions
Course introduction
This course is aimed at providing a comprehensive view on organic chemistry of biomolecules in living organisms. The course focuses on chemical synthesis of carbohydrates, peptides, proteins, nucleotides and lipids, and describes the role of cofactors and metabolic pathways in synthesis of biologically important molecules.
Expected learning outcome
The learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:
- recognize and design synthetic strategies for preparation of biomolecules
- apply protecting groups in organic chemistry
- design how to introduce selective modifications into biomolecules
- understand the link between molecular structure and function of biomolecules
- suggest basic mechanistic descriptions of various organic reactions in living organisms
