Entry requirements

This course cannot be taken by BSc-students of Biomedicine.

Academic preconditions

Students taking the course are expected to have knowledge of the basics of physics, chemistry and biochemistry. The course is based on the knowledge acquired in modules 1 and 2, i.e. SU520 and SU517,

Course introduction

The aim of the course is to give students insight into the function of specialized cells of the human body under normal physiological conditions and in disease. This is important for being able to explain the effect of a pharmacological treatment on specialized cell types under normal physiological conditions and in disease.

Expected learning outcome

The learning objectives of the course are that the student demonstrates:
  • knowledge of the most important molecular and cellular mechanisms in order to understand the structure and functioning of organs (lungs, gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, immune system).
  • comprehension of the most important molecular mechanisms of drugs for the treatment of major diseases that affect the lungs, the gastrointestinal system, liver, pancreas, and the immune system

The following main topics are taught in the course:
  • Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system
  • Pathophysiology and pharmacology of the respiratory system
  • Anatomy and physiology of the gastro-intestinal tract
  • Pathophysiology and pharmacology of the gastro-intestinal tract
  • Organs of the immune system: lymph nodes, lymph vessels, spleen, thymus
  • Basics of immunology
  • Immunopharmacology

Part 2 exam = 2 hours MCQ + essay in the rest of the subjects

Examination aids

The exam is with limited aids. Only the following aids are allowed:

  • Built-in standard calculators in Windows/macOS/Linux.
  • Maple, Mathematica, Mathcad, MATLAB, GeoGebra Apps, R (including R-Studio), CAS TI-Nspire, MS Excel, and LibreOffice Calc are allowed. WordMat is permitted but not recommended. Use of WordMat is at your own risk, and no support will be provided for breakdowns or other errors caused by the program.


Internet is not allowed during the exam. However, you may access system DE-Digital Exam in connection with filling out the multiple-choice questions.

The teaching consists of lectures, in which the students will get an introduction to the course topics and the way to achieve competences. This will be complemented by the study guide and the textbooks, which the students are expected to study independently.


During the classroom lessons, the students will achieve competences in immunology, anatomy, physiology and especially pharmacology. The students will work with tasks, which they will have to prepare at home.


Other planned teaching activities: 
Students are expected to work independently with teaching materials and examples and exercises herein. Students are expected to self-study to work on tasks of the training phase and do some repetition for the written exam.
