Aim and overall content

The overall aim of this course is to teach empowerment approaches, methods and technologies that support leadership and advocacy for community engagement and social mobilization and enable citizens to take better control over the determinants of health.

This is done by providing students with knowledge of:
  • theories of empowerment developed within the social science
  • concepts of empowerment constructs within health disciplines
  • the impact of social structures and policies on individual and community empowerment
  • an empowerment perspective on research and interventions
  • various techniques to engage people in social action and change processes

Relationship between the learning objectives, type of teaching and type of examination

Through the teaching forms and in combination with the exam form the students will learn about the theoretical basis of empowerment and will train their ability to apply empowering methods in community intervention programmes individually and in small groups.

Learning Objectives - Knowledge

On completion of the course, the student must be able to

  • explain and discuss theories of empowerment developed within the social science
  • understand and argue concepts of empowerment constructs within health disciplines
  • discuss and exemplify the impact of social structures and policies on individual and community empowerment

Learning Objectives - Skills

On completion of the course, the student must be able to:
  • discuss basic concepts of empowerment and the values embedded in empowerment
  • discuss and explain connections between policies, societal structures and empowerment
  • explain methodological considerations in doing empowerment research and evaluation, including the roles of the public health professional and research participants
  • plan an empowerment intervention
  • engage citizens in societal change processes aiming at improved neighbourhoods and quality of life

On completion of the course, the student must be able to 
  • apply empowering methods in community intervention programmes and social mobilization

Teaching format and feedback

The teaching is organised in such a way as to support SDU’s underlying principle for active learning and activating teaching, as well as the Faculty of Health Science’s implementation of this principle - the FAIR principles.

The following forms of instruction and work may be applied in the course: Lectures, PBL, case-studies work in groups, group presentations, workshops.

The following forms of feedback may be applied in the course: Teacher feedback and peer feedback (one on one or group).

The activities in the course are primarily aimed at achieving learning objectives and preparing students for the form of examination. The specific forms of instruction and work as well as forms of feedback is made clear in the lesson plan on itslearning.
