Aim and overall content
The course aims to provide the student with a basic knowledge and understanding of the clinical assessment and treatment of muscle injuries, including knowledge on basic muscle physiology, anatomy, and biomechanics, clinical examination methods, rehabilitation, and outcomes. The course focuses on both acute and overuse muscle injuries in the upper and lower extremities. The student will be presented to the pathophysiology of muscle injuries, including considerations related to the diagnostic process, planning of the rehabilitation, progression and regression of exercises, and evaluation of outcomes.
Please note: this course is taught at Hvidovre Hospital in the Capital Region of Denmark, and not in Odense at SDU.

Learning Objectives - Knowledge
- Basic muscle physiology and biomechanics in relation to muscle injuries.
Learning Objectives - Skills
- Analyze movements and function in relation to the most common acute and overuse muscle injuries in sport.
- Apply and evaluate different methods of examination and rehabilitation strategies in relation to these muscle injuries.
- Adopt and apply evidence-based knowledge to plan specific prevention and treatment strategies of muscle injuries, especially in relation to rehabilitation including knowledge on progression and regression of exercises for specific muscle injuries.
- Critically appraise scientific literature regarding muscle physiology, anatomy, and biomechanics in relation to muscle injuries

- Use and adopt specific examination and rehabilitation strategies in relation to common muscle injuries in sports.
Teaching format and feedback
Teaching is organised in such a way as to support the SDU’s Underlying principle for active learning and activating teaching, as well as the Faculty of Health study’s translation of this principle - the FAIR principles.
The following forms of instruction and work may be applied in the course:
- Blended learning with a combination of lectures and group course work. The group work includes presenting a self-chosen topic to the class.
The following forms of feedback may be applied in the course:
- Students will receive oral feedback on their presentation by the course coordinator and peers.
The activities in the course are primarily aimed at achieving learning objectives and preparing students for the form of examination. The specific forms of instruction and work as well as forms of feedback is made clear in the lesson plan on itslearning.

The working hours are distributed between the activities listed under Forms of instruction, work and feedback as well as the exam including the preparation of this.
The students are expected to work 27.5 hours pr. ECTS point for a total of 137,5 hours for this course. The expected workload is distributed in the following way:

Considering the method of assessment and the current study level, specific emphasis will be put on the extent to which the student´s performance meets the learning objectives as well as to what extent the student masters the general competence objectives mentioned in the curriculum,
The grade will be awarded according to the extent of the fulfilment of the learning objectives as described in the Grading Scale Order (karakterbekendtgørelsen)
The grade will be available for the students via the Student Self-Service at the latest four weeks after the hand-in deadline, unless stated otherwise.
