Mandatory prerequisites
Students must have passed no less than 70 ECTS on their Bachelor’s or Bachelor of Engineering degree within chemical engineering / biotechnology or similar course programmes, before the summer school starts.
Overall learning objectives
The student will gain basic and broad knowledge about PCR and its applications. Furthermore, the student will be able to independently apply this knowledge in relevant settings, e.g. within biotechnological production.
Learning objectives - Knowledge
The student will acquire knowledge on:
- PCR
- Type and design of primers
- Design of thermocycling protocols
- Use of probes
- Analysis of data
- Quantitative PCR (qPCR) and applications
- PCR in synthetic biology and genetic engineering
- PCR to detect contaminants, for phylogenetic applications, culture monitoring and microbiome mapping
- Use of PCR for diagnostics
- Application of PCR in different scenarios in research and industry
Learning objectives - Skills
The student will be able to:
- Design primers
- Test PCR in silico, set up and optimize PCR in the laboratory
- Analyze and interpret results from PCR experiment
- Perform DNA Gel electrophoresis
- Design probes for qPCR
- Perform, design and analyze a qPCR experiment
- Perform RNA extraction purification from mammalian cells or plant cells in the laboratory
- Evaluate purity of the purified RNA
- Synthesize cDNA
- Choice of buffers and the impact of buffers
- Novel advances within PCR techniques and design of probes for qPCR
Learning objectives - Competences
The student will be able to:
- Work sensibly, safely and independently in a PCR lab
- Analyze results from a PCR experiment
- Compile a lab report based on a PCR experiment

The examination is based on an overall assessment of:
- Attendance (Minimum 80 % of the time)
- Oral exam : The exam is an oral presentation of a theoretical project on the last days of the course.

The form of examination in the re-examination is the same as in the ordinary examination except the requirement of 80% attendance which is removed.
Additional information
Enrolment is limited to 35 students. If more applicants than places, applicants who meet the mandatory requirements are prioritised according to the below selection criteria:
- Engineering students from Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology who need this specific summer course or 5 ECTS electives to graduate
- Engineering students from Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology
- Students from SDU-TEK provided the course is approved as an elective on their study programmes
- Other students from SDU-TEK with preapproval of credit transfer
- Other students from SDU provided the course is approved as an elective on their study programmes
- Other students from SDU with preapproval of credit transfer
Note: If further selection criteria are needed this will be based on a first-come-first-served basis.
Please note that registration for this elective course is binding. However, we recommend you apply for de-registration of Summer School courses if you do not pass your exams in June, leaving you to register for re-exams in August. If you need to pass mandatory subjects from the 5th semester of your bachelor's programme, you cannot register for the summer course as a master's elective, as you can only take master's electives once your bachelor's degree has been completed.
Students who have taken this course as part of their bachelor’s degree are not allowed to register for the course as part of their master’s degree.
