Learnings objectives - Knowledge
The student must possess knowledge of
- various communication theories and cultural concepts
- various theories of identity construction and stereotypes
- the foreign language area's "values" and "behaviour"
- various themes within intercultural communication as a scientific field
Learning objectives - Skills
The student must be able to
- apply the above theories and concepts in analyses of intercultural communication
- assess the applied theory framework´s strengths and weaknesses
- discuss and argue the case for effective and appropriate intercultural communication
Learning objectives - Competences
The student must be able to
- engage in socially differing groups with assertive behaviour towards self and others
- handle diversity among people with different cultural and ethnic backgrounds
- take action despite feelings of ambiguity and uncertainty
Content
Forms of instruction and work
Teaching in the course may take place in the following forms: lectures, student discussion papers and presentations, as well as discussion, exercises.
Feedback:
The students are offered feedback on their assignments. The teacher informs in the beginning of the semester how the students will receive feedback.
Teaching is organised in such a way as to support the humanities model for active learning and activating teaching, cf. section Didactic, pedagogical basis and contact to research environment in the curriculum. The teacher must inform students about how study activities are organised on commencement of teaching.
The teaching of the course activates the student in the following teaching spaces/learning spaces:
- Teaching space where the university teacher has the responsibility for planning and is present
- Study space where the university teacher has the responsibility for planning but is not present
- Teaching space where the university teacher is present but the students have the responsibility for planning specific sub-activities
- Study space where the students have the responsibility for planning, and the university teacher is not present
It is the student's responsibility to contact the university teacher at the beginning of the semester.

- A theoretical part in which students must demonstrate their theoretical knowledge about intercultural communication as well as their ability to analyse
- An experience based part, where the students must reflect on the acquisition of their own intercultural skills and learning.

Additional information
Students abroad: SDU students who study abroad can take part in the course as a remote course of study. The experience- based part should in these cases include personal experiences and reflections from their international stay. It is the student's responsibility to contact the university teacher at the beginning of the semester.
Assessment criteria:
Considering the method of assessment and the current study level, specific emphasis will be put on the extent to which the student´s performance meets the learning objectives as well as to what extent the student masters the general competence objectives mentioned in the currculum, section Aim of Programme, including any professional profile and specialistions, particularly no. 1-9, 11, that the course pays special attention to.
The grade will be awarded according to the extent of the fulfilment of the learning objectives as described in the Grading Scale Order (karakterbekendtgørelsen).
The linguistic level must be evaluated to be at least a pass at 5th semester level for the overall examination to be passed.
Several students may contribute to the assignment: No, because of the experientially based part.
Reexamination takes place in the same way as the ordinary examination.
