Content
This course focuses on the design and manufacturing of fixed-wing drones (FWDs) using fiber-reinforced composite materials (FRCs).
The summer school offers two educational, intense and intriguing weeks where students gain fundamental knowledge and practical experience with FWDs, FRCs, composite design, and manufacturing.
Working together in international and interdisciplinary project teams, students apply the knowledge and skills to design, build, and test fly drone. The tasks include aerodynamic- and structural design, material selection, manufacturing planning and execution, simulations, etc.
The composite lab at the SDU Drone Center offers various composite manufacturing technologies and materials suitable for different aspects of drone building. The range of processes spans from additive manufacturing with composite materials over to filament winding and vacuum infusion. Natural fibers, like flax, offer sustainable composites, but high-performance glass- and carbon fibers are also available.
Students are most welcome to apply background knowledge from all relevant fields to push the team and improve the project.

Additional information
Enrollment is limited to 10 out of 30 students. If more applicants than places, applicants who meet the mandatory requirements are prioritized according to the below selection criteria:
- Engineering students from Mechanical Engineering who need this specific summer course or 5 ECTS electives to graduate
- Engineering students from Mechanical Engineering (except the above)
- Other students from SDU-TEK provided the course is approved as an elective on their study programmes
- Other students from SDU-NAT og SDU-SAMF with preapproval of credit transfer
- Other students from SDU with preapproval of credit transfer
Note: If selection criteria is needed this will be based on a first-come-first-served basis.
Please note that registration for this elective course is binding. However, we recommend you apply for de-registration of Summer School courses if you do not pass your exams in June, leaving you to register for re-exams in August. Apply by filling out the form “Application of Exemption from the Deadline for Registration or De-registration for Courses” here: https://spoc.sdu.dk/form/4153/view.
The course will be at composite Lab in SDU UAS center/ Odense airport. Transportation between SDU campus and the lab will be provided.
