Academic preconditions

Academic preconditions. Students taking the course are expected to:

  • Have knowledge of molecular structure and properties
  • Are familiar with basic classes of organic molecules
  • Be able to propose mechanisms of organic reactions

Course introduction

This course is aimed at providing a comprehensive view on organic chemistry of biomolecules in living organisms. The course focuses on chemical synthesis of carbohydrates, peptides, proteins, nucleotides and lipids, and describes the role of cofactors and metabolic pathways in synthesis of biologically important molecules. 

The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the course KE505, and gives an academic basis for studying Advanced organic synthesis and Medicinal chemistry, that are part of the degree.

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:

  • Give the competence to explain structure and function of biomolecules
  • Give skills to design and synthesise molecules of biological importance
  • Give knowledge and understanding of organic chemistry in living organisms

Expected learning outcome

The learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:

  • recognize and design synthetic strategies for preparation of biomolecules
  • apply protecting groups in organic chemistry
  • design how to introduce selective modifications into biomolecules
  • understand the link between molecular structure and function of biomolecules
  • suggest basic mechanistic descriptions of various organic reactions in living organisms

Teaching Method

The teaching method is based on three phase model.
  • Intro phase: 22 hours
  • Skills training phase: 22 hours, hereof tutorials: 22 hours
Activities during the study phase:
  • Solution of weekly assignments in order to discuss these in the exercise sections.
  • Self study of various parts of the course material.
  • Reflection upon the intro and training sections.
